The LightOut Highschool Initiative is proud to announce its first external funding support, courtesy of the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany. This significant partnership marks a milestone in the initiative’s efforts to promote environmental sustainability and climate action among secondary school students in Lagos State.

The funding will support an innovative climate action and recycling campaign across secondary schools in Lagos. This campaign aims to educate and inspire students on the importance of recycling, upcycling, and the circular economy through engaging and educational concerts. By merging music, art, and education, the initiative seeks to create an eco-conscious generation that tackles plastic waste and leads climate action.

The partnership was formalized during a signing ceremony held at the German Consulate in Lagos on May 24, 2024. The event was attended by a delegation from the LightOut Highschool Initiative, including its founder, Gaise Baba, Country Director Susan Odurinde, and Head of Programs Iyke Kalu. Representing the German Consulate were Deputy Consul General Mr. Gerald Wolf and Program Officer Economic, Political, Cultural, and Press Section, Udochukwu Okeahialam.

“LightOut Highschool Initiative extends its gratitude to the German Consulate for its support and partnership. Together, we look forward to a successful and impactful campaign that will inspire a generation of eco-conscious young leaders in Lagos,” said Gaise Baba, Founder of LightOut Highschool Initiative.

The LightOut Highschool Initiative, founded in 2017 by Nigerian Afro-fusion artist Gaise Baba through his organization 464 Projects, is a musical outreach program for students across secondary schools and colleges. The initiative leverages music and art to engage and support students in their educational, social, and personal development. To date, LightOut has executed 21 editions, reaching over 31,000 students.

The initiative focuses on three of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through its work: SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). The new funding from the German Consulate will enable the LightOut Highschool Initiative to expand its reach and impact, empowering Lagos youth to participate in recycling and climate action initiatives.

The upcoming campaign will include seminars and concerts aimed at educating secondary school students on the importance of recycling and upcycling. By combining music, art, and education, the initiative aims to foster a culture of environmental responsibility and sustainability among young people.
