Vienna Carroll & The Folk have recently unveiled their latest single, “I Know I Been Changed,” from their upcoming CD, “Harlem: Afro Future Roots.” This authentic folk Spiritual combines traditional vocals with a modern African diaspora groove, creating a soulful and unique mashup of sounds.
“I Know I Been Changed” is a vibrant fusion of old-world charm and new-world influences. With Vienna Carroll’s rich and soulful sound, the song takes listeners back to her first music love, the Black church. Vienna shares forgotten stories of Black heroes and presents Spirituals and work songs through a modern lens, creating what she calls Afro-Future Roots Music.
Vienna Carroll is joined by her groovetastic band, The Folk, featuring Stanley Banks on bass, Washboard XT/Newman Taylor Baker on washboard, and Keith Johnston on guitar. Together, they craft a sound that blends traditional vocals, lilting guitar, toe-tapping washboard, and funky bass, resulting in a bright and crisp finish that is sure to uplift spirits.
“We freed ourselves from slavery. We are the center of our own freedom stories. The Spirituals are our liberation songs,” says Carroll.
“I Know I Been Changed” is the result of Vienna and the band’s collaboration, showcasing their ability to reinvent classic blues and gospel themes with a politically charged twist. Their unique sound offers a fresh take on traditional music, captivating listeners with a blend of 19th-century standards and contemporary influences.
