Acclaimed Nollywood actress and filmmaker Ini Edo has publicly apologized to the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) following backlash over the title of her latest film, A Very Dirty Christmas. In an emotional video statement shared on social media, Ini Edo expressed deep regret for any offense caused, emphasizing that the title was never intended to discredit Christianity or insult the faith community.
The controversy erupted after CAN criticized the movie’s name as offensive and potentially derogatory toward the sacred holiday, prompting calls for its withdrawal from cinemas. Ini Edo, who stars in and produced the film, addressed the concerns directly, breaking down in tears as she pleaded with the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) not to pull the project.
She explained that the title serves as a metaphor for the story’s themes of redemption, family struggles, and unexpected twists during the festive season, rather than a literal or disrespectful reference to Christmas.
“I apologize to anyone who feels offended by the title of this film. A Very Dirty Christmas wasn’t meant to discredit Christianity. I’m sorry,” Ini Edo stated in her video. “Please don’t pull my film. I never meant to insult or disgrace Christians—I’m a Christian too. This is just a creative expression, and I respect the sentiments of the church deeply.”
