The Recording Academy’s Black Music Collective (BMC) has announced that legendary gospel artist, songwriter, and producer Kirk Franklin will be honored with the Black Music Icon Award at the fourth annual Recording Academy Honors on Thursday, January 29, 2026, at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles. Franklin shares this distinction with R&B sensation Brandy, while Pharrell Williams will receive the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award during the star-studded GRAMMY Week event.
The Black Music Icon Award celebrates Black music creators whose artistry, innovation, and service have profoundly shaped the industry and inspired generations worldwide. For over three decades, Franklin has revolutionized contemporary gospel by fusing it with hip-hop, R&B, and pop elements, creating timeless anthems that transcend genres and unite audiences in faith and celebration.
A 20-time GRAMMY winner, Franklin first burst onto the scene with his 1993 debut album Kirk Franklin & The Family, which became the first gospel album to sell over a million copies and spent 100 weeks atop the Billboard Gospel charts. Iconic hits like “Stomp,” “Revolution,” “Lean on Me,” and “Brighter Day” propelled gospel into mainstream consciousness, earning crossover success and collaborations with artists including Kanye West, Chance the Rapper, Tori Kelly, and Maverick City Music. Through his Fo Yo Soul Recordings imprint in partnership with RCA Records, Franklin continues to mentor emerging talent and produce Christ-centered content that resonates globally.
“Still amazed by what God can do,” shares Kirk Franklin. “Thankful and honored to receive the Black Music Icon Award from the Recording Academy during GRAMMY Week.”
“Kirk has not only revolutionized gospel music but has also bridged the gap between genres, redefining the possibilities of musical expression and inspiring generations with his message of hope and faith,” said Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason jr. “His unwavering dedication to his craft and his legacy of service embody the very essence of the Black Music Icon Award. We look forward to honoring Kirk for his profound influence on the industry and the countless lives he continues to touch worldwide.”
Originally slated for 2025 before adjustments to GRAMMY Week programming, this honor arrives as a fitting tribute to Franklin’s enduring legacy. The event, produced by MVD Inc. with Adam Blackstone as music supervisor, promises powerful performances and tributes celebrating Black excellence in music.
